Different types of brake controllers?

I am wondering which type of brake controller should i buy to be used as my brake controller for my RV. I have a 27ft pull type trailer and i understand that there is 2 types of brake controllers. One is automatic and the other one is a manual setting. Can someone tell me should i spend the money for the automatic controller or is the manual one easy to set up.

The two types of controllers are "proportional" and "time delayed." Proportional controllers use various devices or systems to apply the trailer brakes proportionally to how hard you are braking the vehicle for smoother braking. Time delayed controllers apply a set amount of pressure after a set amount of time once you push the brake pedal.

They both require you to set them up for your trailer load, and both engage automatically when you hit the brakes. They both will have manual override controls that will allow you to engage the trailer brakes, even if you are not braking the vehicle.

Proportional controllers are a bit more than Time Delayed, but the braking is infinitely smoother. Most people that towing more than about once or twice will opt for the Proportional. I have included a link to an FAQ article about brake controllers, I think you'll find it pretty informative.
